Gomphosus Varius
Provide Gomphosus Wrasse with a well established large aquarium with plenty of swim room as they are constant day swimmers. Gomphosus Wrasse develop long beaks as they mature giving them their common name of Birdnose Wrasse. They use their long beaks to probe coral branches and crevices for crustaceans. Females are generally smaller than males and juveniles are harder to id as they have not developed the prominent beak. Wrasse are hermaphrodites meaning they start as juveniles/females but at some point in their life may turn into a male. Provide a diet rich in meaty based foods multiple times daily. Wrasse are jumpers be sure to provide an aquarium with a tight-fitting lid.
Female and male Birdnose Wrasse will have different colouration. Males are generally a dark green and a white tipped tail while females are black with a white to yellow belly and tail. Birdnose Wrasse can grow up to 28cm in length.
We recommend a minimum aquarium size of 1500L or larger for this species.
